Febreze Small Spaces + Accessible Design/Engineering
Febreze Small Spaces is a hassle-free way to keep any space fresh—no outlets, no batteries, just continuous scent diffusion. Originally, P&G designed the product with a push-button activation mechanism which begins a slow and consistent scent release for 30 days. While the intent was to create a simple and intuitive experience, user feedback revealed a challenge: activating the button required more force than anticipated, posing a challenge for users with limited dexterity or hand strength and frequently resulting in an unactivated device.
P&G turned to Design Central to develop an activation method that requires less effort while feeling natural to users. The solution? A flip-to-activate tab. Instead of requiring firm pressure, the new tab can be easily flipped with a single finger, reducing strain, assuring activation, and improving the device's intuitiveness. A small triangle icon guides users to the correct motion, and a satisfying “click” confirms successful activation.
While this change may seem simple, it required a significant engineering effort to create a mechanism that effectively controlled scent release while reducing manufacturing complexity and cost. The design had to balance functionality, manufacturability, and durability while ensuring a seamless user experience.
By prioritizing inclusivity and usability, Design Central helped P&G enhance the product’s functionality while maintaining its signature simplicity. This project is another example of how thoughtful design and engineering can make everyday products more accessible for everyone.
